As part of the Mon(th)day Talks series organized by the Department of Political Science and International Relations, the event "Minorities in Turkish-Greek Relations" was held on Monday, 15 June 2026, at 12:00 in Block B Classroom 213.
The event opened with a presentation by Hazal Papuççular, who provided a historical overview of Turkish-Greek relations, focusing particularly on the population exchange following the Treaty of Lausanne. Papuççular examined the factors that led to the population exchange and assessed its impact on bilateral relations from a historical perspective.
The second presentation was delivered by Nihan Akıncılar, who discussed the concept of minorities, the treatment of minority groups under international law, and the legal frameworks governing minority rights. Within this context, Akıncılar examined the Turkish-Greek population exchange from both legal and political perspectives and shared with participants the social, economic, and legal challenges faced by those who were compelled to migrate as a result of the exchange.
Attended by academic staff and students, the event concluded with a Q&A session, providing an opportunity for a comprehensive discussion of the historical and legal dimensions of minority issues in Turkish-Greek relations.
