The online event titled “Reflections on the Transformation of Knowledge into Action and Assessment Processes in Foreign Language Teaching,” organized by FBUTÖMER, which operates under Fenerbahçe University, took place on April 13, 2026, at 19:00 via Microsoft Teams with 147 participants.
The event was moderated by Lecturer Kübra Kaya Ülker, while the opening remarks were delivered by FBÜTÖMER Director Lecturer Dr. Egemen Ozan Sönmez. At the beginning of the program, Turkish Language Institution President Prof. Dr. Osman Mert also addressed the participants.
In his speech, Prof. Dr. Osman Mert emphasized that the Turkish Language Institution is not merely an organization but also a shared value for academics and all those working in the field of language, stating, “The Turkish Language Institution is your institution.” Referring to the institution’s dictionary projects, Mert provided information about ongoing work on the three-dimensional laser scanning of inscriptions written in the Old Turkic alphabet. He noted that inscriptions found in Central Asia have also been included in the project. Emphasizing openness to academic research and collaboration, Mert stated that cooperation between academics and institutions would yield significant and high-quality results.
Mert also touched on cultural heritage studies, noting that 3D laser scans have been conducted on the inscriptions of Kül Tigin, Bilge Khan, Bilge Tonyukuk, Moyun Çor, and Taryat.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emrah Boylu, who served as a guest speaker at the event, made key remarks regarding assessment and evaluation processes in foreign language instruction. In his presentation, Boylu highlighted the close connection between language processes and assessment methods. He also emphasized the role of artificial intelligence today, in addition to validity, reliability, and competency-based approaches. Stressing the adoption of an action-oriented approach in education, Boylu highlighted the following key points in his speech:
Positive Focus: Focusing on what students can do rather than what they cannot do supports the learning process in a more constructive way.
Reflection in Exams: All educational activities should reflect this action-oriented approach, and it should be integrated into examination systems.
Process-Based Assessment: Boylu noted that assessment tools should focus on students’ competencies and emphasized the importance of process-based assessment and evaluation.
The event concluded with FBÜTÖMER Director Lecturer Dr. Egemen Ozan Sönmez presenting a certificate of participation to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emrah Boylu following the question-and-answer session.
