Is the English Preparatory Program compulsory?

The English Preparatory Program is compulsory for students who are registered in programs where the medium of instruction is English.

Students who will attend the English Preparatory Program on demand, must submit their petitions stating that they want to study in the English Preparatory Program to the Registrar's Office and the Department of Foreign Languages ​​during registration.

What is the duration of the English Preparatory Program?

The normal education period in the English Preparatory Program is one academic year. The maximum education period of the program is two academic years.

Students who are successful in the English Preparatory Program at the end of the first academic year start their programs in which they are enrolled in the second academic year. Students who fail at the end of the first academic year continue their education in the English Preparatory Program. Students who fail at the end of the second academic year are dismissed from the university.

Students who attend the English Preparatory Program voluntarily are assigned to the first year regardless of whether they are successful at the end of the first academic year.

How can I be exempted from the English Preparatory Program?

In order to be exempted from the English Preparatory Program, students who have newly registered at the university must take the exams given by the Department of Foreign Languages, and be successful.

In addition, students who have a document showing that they have obtained the required score from a national or international language proficiency exam accepted by the Senate, or who have attended a program instructed 100% in English at their previous university, and those who hold a document verifying their proficiency from the English Preparatory Program of the university they have attended are also exempt from the English Preparatory Program.

What is the English Placement Exam? Is it compulsory to take the English Placement Exam?

It is an examination for determining the level of the students who will start the university for the first time and who will take the English Proficiency Exam to be given afterwards. Students who will be attending university for the first time are obliged to sit this exam. While students who are successful in this exam are entitled to take the English Proficiency Exam, those who fail are placed at the level appropriate to them in the Preparatory Program according to their exam results. There is no make-up for this exam.

What is the English Proficiency Exam? How many times is it held in an academic year?

The English Proficiency Exam is administered four times during an academic year.

The English Proficiency Exam is an exam that allows the student to be exempted from the English Preparatory Program and assesses the student's proficiency in English. Students passing the Placement Exam at the beginning of the academic year and eligible to take the Proficiency Exam and those who continue the Preparatory Program during the year are admitted to the English Proficiency Exam. There is no make-up for this exam.

Do I have a chance to pass the preparatory class without taking the English Proficiency Exam?

In order to be exempted from the English Preparatory Program, students are required to get sufficient scores from one of the national or international exams whose equivalence is accepted by our university.

What is a modular system?

This system consists of 8-week modules each. In each module, students have a variety of assessment methods, including midterm and final exams. The English Preparatory Program consists of four modules (A1, A2, B1, B2). However, C1 and C2 modules are available in the spring term for students starting at an advanced level in the fall semester.

Is it compulsory to attend classes?

Yes, it is a must. Our students must attend 80% of their classes to take the final exam. Our students have to come to the classes on time. Students who come to the classes late are written absent.

Is there a summer school in the English Preparatory Program?

The summer school opened by the Department of Foreign Languages ​​provides English at the level of "B2" in the English Preparatory Program. If necessary, summer school can be opened for other levels. The summer school program lasts a total of 8 weeks.

How is my English level assessed at the beginning of the academic year?

An exam consisting of multiple choice questions and a writing section is given to our students. The name of this exam is the English Placement Exam (FBU-Placement). Students are placed at the appropriate levels according to their scores. Students who get enough points from the English Placement Exam (at least 65 points) are also exempt from the English Preparatory Program if they take the English Proficiency Exam (FBU-Proficiency) and get a score of 60 or more at the end of this exam and they can start their associate or undergraduate studies.

How is my English assessed in the module?

Students are evaluated with various quizzes, projects, presentations, and group work, in which their skills such as reading, listening, speaking, writing, vocabulary are assessed, apart from the midterm exam and the final exam at the end of the module.

How do I pass to the department?

The exit exam of Fenerbahçe University English Preparatory Program is the English Proficiency Exam (FBU-Proficiency). At the beginning of the academic year, our students take the English Placement Exam (FBU-Placement) and, if they get enough scores from this exam, they are entitled to take the English Proficiency Exam. Students who pass the English Proficiency Exam can start their associate or undergraduate studies.

In addition, our students can take the English Proficiency Exam after the fall semester, spring semester, and summer school, if they do not have absenteeism problems.

What happens if I miss the module exams?

Health report must be sent to the Foreign Languages ​​Department within the first three working days after the exam date that the student has missed. Our students can take the make-up exam for the module midterm and the end-of-module exam if their reports are accepted. While there are no make-up exams for vocabulary quiz, reading quiz, the English Proficiency Exam, the English Placement Exam, students can have make-up exams for presentations and group discussion.

What happens if I miss the module exams?

In this case, our students are required to bring a report from a fully-equipped state hospital. Health report must be sent to the Foreign Languages ​​Department within the first three working days after the exam date that the student has missed. Our students can take the make-up exam for the module midterm and the end-of-module exam if their reports are accepted. However, no make-up exam is given for other assessment tools.
